Meet Charlie
Charlie has been studying, playing, and performing clarinet for over 20 years. He was born in 1979 (you do the math), grew up in San Francisco, CA and started playing clarinet in the Fourth grade through his elementary school's music program. After a few months of wallowing on his own, he began studying privately with David Barnett, a gifted and well-known clarinet/recorder instructor and freelance performer in the SF Bay Area. As he continued to study with Mr. Barnett, Charlie began competing in youth competitions and performing regularly in his school's church services. In Eighth grade, he joined the Marin Symphony Youth Orchestra with whom he played for three years. In high school, Charlie played in all available musical settings: orchestra, concert band, jazz band, pep band, and pit-orchestra for musicals.
Charlie graduated with honors from UC Davis with a B.S. in Microbiology and a Minor in Music. Despite the science major, Charlie played clarinet extensively throughout his college career. However, after several years of youth orchestras and large bands, he was feeling burnt out towards "big" groups and overbearing conductors, so he chose to focus primarily on chamber music. While at Davis, he played in numerous trios, quartets, and quintets along with a handful of larger chamber groups. He also had the opportunity to play and perform on most of the other members of the clarinet family, including bassett horn, bass and contra-bass, alto, and Eb.
Unsure about exactly what to do with himself after graduating from college, Charlie enrolled in the UC Davis teacher credential program with the notion of becoming a high school science teacher. Although he did receive his teaching license, Charlie realized that he really needed to pursue a career in music. After a series of events and decisions, Charlie moved to the Twin Cities in 2004 to start that career.
In the Twin Cities, Charlie played and performed with all kinds of musicians and groups, including: the St. Paul Conservatory's Clarinet Choir, Hauser Dance Studio, and local bands Ada Jane and Po' Boy Local 151. He also began teaching lessons regularly, which eventually led to the formation of Howling Wind Studio in 2009.
Currently, Charlie resides in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin and continues to teach clarinet lessons privately at Howling Wind Clarinet Studio. He also plays drums in a few local bands, and bikes and kayaks in his spare time.
